A marathon takes incredible endurance. A double marathon takes Volkswagen TDI clean diesel-like endurance. Which is why Volkswagen’s TDI sponsored runner Dean Karnazes set out to accomplish that very feat Sunday October 11th at the Chicago Marathon. Check out some photos of Dean from Chicago Marathon weekend as he talks about “Going the Extra Mile” at the Expo Center, signs autographs and chats with fans, and runs an astounding 52.4 miles. It was a truly impressive performance, and we were thrilled to be there every fleet-footed step of the way.

Dean’s 1st marathon time: 3:52:17
Dean’s 2nd marathon time: 3:57:28

Totally badass, wish I could be there to see it. Anyone running with him?

What an inspiration. I read “Ultramarathon Man” and it spoke to me on so many levels — can’t recommend it enough. A call to action to the soul. Really amazing.

I was leisurely running a 4 miler in downtown Chicago around 3 PM when I noticed a pace car following a lone runner hours after most runners finished the Chicago marathon. I was thinking that there was no way anyone would be crazy enough to run 52 miles but then again, why would a pace car be following this runner on the day of the Chicago Marathon. I give Dean tremendous credit after finding out from this blog that it was in fact an ultra marathon that he was running and for the folks at Volkswagen for sponsoring such a tremendous achievement. I was truly inspired by his act.

My entire family followed Dean during the TDI Double marathon. We were amazed and awestruck. What a remarkable accomplishment! All I can say is, “Go Diesel Dean!”
