My dad has a 99 Jetta tdi that he has modified, it now has 175 hp. and over 300 lb ft. of torque. The car gets 45+ mpg and its funner than heck to drive! What hybrid out there does that???

Even adding a pound or two more PSI into your tires, gives your car a whole new attitude, not just increasing the power. Just like 99% of auto makers out there, just don't simply bolt on a RAM or Cold Air Intake for the love and cheap gain of performance. I mean the demand for MPG's and Power these days are over the top, and am glad to see VW has grasped that concept, and Hybrids out there, just simply DO NOT offer the power. VW has ultimately produced an understated car.
IMO
"oh wait, its diesel". as far as i can see, American auto makers, and oil producers/importers have influenced and put the image into peoples heads that we just ONLY need to get better fuel efficient "gasoline" vehicles. *No, I'm crazy or a conspirator*

I myself would just LOVE to have a diesel powered sport bike. I mean think about the torque and MPG's i could get with that, eh... not to mention they'll run forever "literally"

If its more power you want just get a new turbo for it, or try to convince Vdub to add upgraded turbos as an option... even the most slightest of HP, and torque gains can make the same car feel different. Tho it might decrease the MPG's slightly. Then again if you just shed a few pounds off here and there with the same engine and performance you could still ultimately keep the same MPG's listed currently. i think most of us like to have more options, and not just "trim" styles.

actually, if ya wanted to and know where to get it... ethanol or "corn whiskey", can and does act just like an anti freezing agent. same principle as engine coolent. the more coolent:water ratio, the better it withstands low temperatures

Hell! i dont understand why americans see diesel as dirty. They call it 'new technology'. We Indians use diesel regularly and now are finding petrol cars to be second class. All diesel vehicles including Indian make start in subzero temperatures and a luxurious feel. Americans are still with old tech, pity them!

Seriously I don't know why America has a bad opinion about diesel. We have some in Europe and we simply love diesel.
In the US diesel gels, is dirty, that was 20 years ago.

A great tip for hwy mileage. Set your cruise control at 58 miles per hour. This may seem a little slow but when you figure all the other traffic is accelerating and decelerating multiple times an hour and you will never have to do either. I have tested this many times. I always get over 46 mpg and maybe take about 1/2 hour longer to get to the destination after an all day trip. With the normal 70 MPH highway speed limit you are ok at 58 and you will never have to touch either the accelerator or brakes.
