Diesels have a reputation for being dirty. But the advanced technology in Volkswagen TDI clean diesels makes that a thing of the past. To demonstrate just how clean clean diesel really is, we test the new Volkswagen Touareg TDI against a traditional diesel. Can TDI clean diesel technology really reduce sooty emissions by 95%? The proof is in the coffee filters.

What would be a better test is to compare the TDI with a standard gasoline engine Touareg.

I second Michael Watson’s comment. While I think it’s important to demonstrate how much cleaner diesels have become over the past 30 years, I think it’s also important to show how clean modern diesels are compared to gas engines. Perhaps some firm emissions numbers might have made for a more scientific comparison? I REALLY want to see diesels become more mainstream, and I think VW will be at the forefront of it…let’s make it happen!!

I am currently driving a friends 2000 jetta tdi, that is set up for vegetable oil with an extra 13 gallon tank for the veggie oil. and I am amazed at the gas mileage im getting on the either fuel. The reg. diesel is coming in at just over 50 mpg, and the veg prob. gets 45 mpg, absolutely amazing. The new reg. fuel hybrids are barely getting 40. Go vw, for sure….

I work in Europe, & drive a 2006 Golf/Rabbit Mk5 2.0ltr GT TDi DPF with 207Bhp & 338lbs of torque! Yes, you read that right!
That Coffee filter test is good. I’ll tell you now that VW’s Diesel Particulate Filter (or DPF for short) is fantastic. I have never once seen any soot from my exhaust. I had the same engine in my last Golf (also a Mk5 2.0ltr TDi), which I bought just before VW brought out their DPF equipped Clean TDi’s.
In my last Golf (Pre DPF), under hard acceleration I could see the soot billowing in my side mirror. But in my current DPF Clean Diesel, there’s not a sign of that black soot!
I was very impressed with this, & couple that to an average of 51mpg (UK Gallon, so around 42mpg US Gallon) on the highway, & 35mpg in town, I’m cuffed to bits. I regularly get 450 miles from 55ltrs of Diesel, but that includes lots of town driving & fast Autobahn driving.
Wake up to diesel America. 73% of new cars sold in Europe are Diesel. VW don’t offer their 2.5ltr 170bhp gas engine over here because it’s truly awful!
Instead, they sell a little petrol 1.4TSi (it has a turbo & a supercharger), which you can have with either 90 /120 /160 or 170bhp. It’s clean, frugal & fast as anything else out there. Hopefully, VWoA will pull their finger out & start offering you proper modern engines. Their Clean diesels were only 2 years behind Europe. If that 2 years delay holds, then you guys should be getting TSi technology soon, if not already. So, if you don’t want to buy Diesel yet, wait for one of those!
You deserve good diesels! VW’s lead the way

This test is right on, took a whiff of the exhaust the other day…I could not detect any foul smell or exhaust like emissions, the stuff coming out of the tail pipe was more like steam.

70% less greenhouse CO2 emissions than average gasoline engine and 40+ mpg! Check out my cause on Facebook, Buy clean Diesel Vehicles! Thanks.

I recently purchased a 2010 Sportswagon and its the best car I have ever owned. That coffe filter test is real and I would recommend a VW to anyone. I will never buy anything else…

I love my 2010 Sportwagen tdi. At the dealer there were few tdi models to choose from. Also the dearler added a mark up at this Henderson, Nv store. You will be hijacked if you really want a tdi, we were out of state so we caved in. Can’t believe the greed even in a depression. But HEY VW has a winning product. Great workmanship and materials and I like that I am green and saving fuel.
