VW’s Dean Karnazes runs a double marathon

September 30, 2009.

A marathon takes incredible endurance. A double marathon takes Volkswagen TDI clean diesel-like endurance. Which is why Volkswagen’s TDI sponsored runner Dean Karnazes set out to accomplish that very feat Sunday October 11th at the Chicago Marathon. Check out some photos of Dean from Chicago Marathon weekend as he talks about “Going the Extra Mile” at the Expo Center, signs autographs and chats with fans, and runs an astounding 52.4 miles. It was a truly impressive performance, and we were thrilled to be there every fleet-footed step of the way.

Jetta TDI Cup: Cates Wins First Race in New Jersey

September 21, 2009.

Millville, NJ – Less than 24 hours after one of the most exciting races of the season, the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup drivers returned to New Jersey Motorsports Park for their second race of the weekend. And once again, the drivers didn’t disappoint. Race fans were treated to a near repeat of yesterday’s thrilling performance on the 14-turn, 2.225-mile road course.

The race began with top qualifier Mark Pombo on pole position in the #20 Volkswagen Parts & Accessories car, and as the green flag dropped, Pombo pulled away quickly to an impressive lead. Pombo’s run was cut short, however, by an accident between the #22 car of Andrew Novich and the #3 car of Taylor Broekemeier, which caused a full-course caution on the second lap. When racing resumed, Pombo continued to lead for a few more laps, but then things started to heat up when Jake Thompson claimed the top spot on lap 8 going into turn 1. Pombo was able to reclaim the lead two laps later, but on lap 11, Devin Cates capitalized on a battle that saw several of the frontrunners venture off track. The Virginia native then drove to the front and never looked back as he took the checkered flag in the #29 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Driver Selection/Cutaway Creations car. The win marks Cates’ first series win, and makes him the sixth different driver to stand atop the podium this season.

“I’ve shown that I can be fast in the series this year, but I’ve not been able to back up my speed with solid finishes until now,” Cates said. “So, to be able to get a win before the end of the season is awesome. There were some great battles out there today. Once I was able to get around Mark [Pombo], I was determined not to give him the spot back. Thankfully, he raced me clean, and we both wound up on the podium. I know it’s too late for me to think about winning the Championship at this point, but I want to close out the season strong, and this is a great way to start.”

Pombo and Timmy Megenbier rounded out the podium with second and third place finishes. In nine races, Megenbier has been on the podium a series record of eight times. As a result of his consistency, Megenbier now has 346 points and will carry a 39-point Championship lead into the final race of the season at Road Atlanta. He will take the title regardless of any other driver results if he can finish 15th or better. Andy Lee (307), Joey Atterbury (273), Thompson (271) and Pombo (262) are also among the top five drivers in the Championship. Perhaps the best battle heading into the final race will be for “Rookie of the Year” honors. Atterbury and Thompson are the two drivers in the hunt, and they’re only separated by two points.

Red Bull athlete and freestyle motocross rider Mat Rebeaud had high hopes for today as a result of his ninth-place starting position, but an early off-track adventure caused a mechanical problem with his Jetta TDI Cup car and he was forced to retire after only four laps, placing 23rd. Retired DC United goalie Mike Ammann won today’s battle of the guest drivers with a 21st-place finish.

“After a rough start with the crash in practice on Friday, this has been an awesome weekend,” Ammann said. “I have a whole new appreciation for the skill of these drivers. I know that this is considered a bit of a development series, but there’s some serious talent out there. I had two goals for the races. I didn’t want to crash or finish last, and I was able to accomplish both yesterday and today, so I’m walking away a happy man.”

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series’ final race of the season will take place in two weeks on August 25-26 at Road Atlanta. Live timing and scoring is available at http://www.livetiming.net/SCCA/VW/livetiming.asp.

VW Jetta TDI Cup Jake Thompson Podium

Jetta TDI Cup: Thompson scores second win

September 21, 2009.

Millville, NJ – It’s been a weekend full of challenges for the 26 drivers competing in the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Today’s race brought a whole new challenge: dry conditions.

After qualifying the previous day in extremely wet conditions requiring Pirelli rain tires, today’s sudden dry conditions turned the tables on the drivers, as they switched back to racing slicks for the first of two races on the 14-turn, 2.225-mile road course.

It was clear from the moment the race started the drivers would be taking advantage of the dry racing surface to put on a show of speed and fuel efficiency for the fans. Lap times during the race improved by nearly 10 seconds over qualifying times as a result of the new tires, and overtaking and passing throughout the field was some of the best seen so far this season.

Polesitter Andy Lee held on to the lead well into the race, building a nearly four second cushion at one point, but the trio of Jake Thompson, Timmy Megenbier and Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle became a growing presence in his mirrors as the race wore on, with three of the four drivers taking the lead in the battle for the podium in the closing moments of the race.

On lap 17, Sierra Lendle passed Lee for the lead going into turn one, but Lee was able to regain his position one lap later. Then, it was Thompson’s turn on lap 18, as he dove underneath Lee in Turn 1 to move into the lead with one lap left. The Calgary, Alberta native never looked back as he took the checkered flag in the #19 Oakley car for the second time this season. Lee placed second, with Megenbier taking third for his series-leading seventh podium finish of the season.

“What a crazy race today,” Thompson said. “My strategy coming it was to be cautious since none of us had been able to run on a dry track this weekend. At first, it felt like I was starting to go backwards, but then guys ahead of me started going off track a lot, so my patience was rewarded. About halfway through the race, it felt like I was stuck in fourth place, but I was eventually able to find a few spots on the track where I was better than the guys in front of me, and I timed my passes really well. After winning during our first race weekend, it’s great to finally get back to the top of the podium, and I hope to make the same climb tomorrow.”

The race results didn’t have a major impact on the Championship point standings. With two races to go, Megenbier has 306 points, which represents a 31-point lead over second place Lee (275). Joey Atterbury (255), Thompson (251) and Pombo (214) round out the top five spots.

“Unfortunately, I lost eight points of the lead I brought to New Jersey, but I’ve said all along that I just need solid finishes from here on out to win the Championship,” Megenbier said. “I would have loved to get the win, but now isn’t the time to get greedy. A podium is certainly good in my mind, and now I just need to repeat it tomorrow. The magic number for me tomorrow is 60. If I can gain some ground on Andy (Lee) and the others, the Championship will be mine tomorrow. It’s going to be tough, but I’m hoping for the best.”

Perhaps the real story of this race weekend though is the success of guest driver Matt Rebaud. Although it was his first time ever competing on four wheels, the Red Bull® sponsored freestyle motocross racer went from starting in 20th position to finishing 11th. Fellow guest driver and retired MLS player, Mike Ammann placed 21st after starting 26th.

“Today was awesome,” Rebeaud said. “It was my first race in a car, and after a really bad start, I was able to move up through the field and keep the car in once piece. I think 11th is great for my first race, but I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I’m starting ninth, so hopefully I’ll be able to improve on today’s result. Racing on four wheels is definitely a lot different than two, but I’m having a blast.”

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series returns to action at New Jersey Motorsports Park tomorrow for Round 9 at 10:55 am ET. Live timing and scoring is available at http://www.livetiming.net/SCCA/VW/livetiming.asp.

Andy Lee Jetta TDI Cup

TDI Cup Racer Andy Lee Comes Clean

September 16, 2009.

Andy Lee knows about sacrifice. Six years ago his mother sold her house to help him start his career in racing. Since then, Lee has taken that same level of dedication to the track. When he’s not searching for sponsorship money, he walks the tracks and does his homework to get an edge over the competition. His hard work finally paid off as he tore up the track at the Autobahn Country Club and took home first place.

When I’m about to have an impact with something I feel more disappointed then scared. All I can think about during a crash is how much it’s going to cost to fix everything. I have never worried too much about getting hurt.

The TDI Cup cars are so evenly matched that you almost always end up running in close quarters with someone. It’s very easy to misjudge what the guys around you are going to do all the time and sometimes you get it wrong. The other reason people touch is out of frustration. It’s so difficult to pass in this series and some drivers get what we call the “red mist” where they basically try to move someone out of their way and hope no one notices.

There have been tracks that I felt connected to right from the beginning. The Autobahn is one of those tracks. Mid-Ohio felt the same also but I lacked one crucial ingredient there: LUCK. You can do everything right some weekends but the results just aren’t in the cards. There are a lot of drivers in this series that can win on any given weekend but they don’t do enough pre-race prep to ready themselves.

In the TDI Cup we’re not allowed to practice on the tracks where we race, so I study on-board videos and track maps before an event. I try to talk to drivers who have raced there before, and I check the weather forecast. I also try to get into town a day early to walk the track and watch other series run to get an idea of how I want to plan my strategy. Homework is crucial and some of the drivers don’t do enough of this and that’s why they aren’t winning.

All and all I have been impressed with the performance of the rookies this year. They are certainly racing cleaner than we did last year. The vets, myself included, thought we were going to show the rookies who’s boss, but then at VIR the rookies won both races. I think the vets decided we needed to even the score and since then the vets have won the last three races. It’s all in good fun. I respect everyone on the track but it’s always fun to bust each other’s chops here and there.

My first instinct after crossing the line was to call my mom. Throughout my life she has always backed me up 100% when it came to my dreams of being a professional racecar driver, no matter how far fetched it seemed.

After the win I called her and she screamed into the phone so loud I nearly went deaf! It was nice to give her the good news.

Of course there is life after the TDI Cup but what exactly I have no idea. I have to be able to raise sponsor money over the off-season and that will determine everything. I would like to compete in Grand-Am if possible.

I’m not better than most, I just want it more than most!

When I was growing up I had a lot of people telling me I wouldn’t amount to much. I was a horrible student and I got into trouble here and there in high school. I eventually dropped out of high school to pursue my racing career and that made a lot of people think I was going to be a complete failure. When people doubt me it makes me want to prove them wrong. Doubt has always provided me with a great deal of motivation.

I’m not looking to beat one driver… I want to beat all of them!!!

Racing will continue to get greener, it’s inevitable. The sport needs to act more responsible if it wants to survive. There are always going to be people that will dislike racing because of all the oil problems this country is having. I think racing should have been making bigger strides to be more fuel-efficient a long time ago.

Racing technology always finds its way into consumer cars, and I think Volkswagen recognizes this and is making an effort to move the sport in the right direction. It’s only a matter of time before we are racing hybrids and electric cars.

I tell people it’s like a reality show on wheels. If you have never watched racing before, this is the perfect series to start with. You have 25-30 young drivers battling each other for success. Anyone who follows the series will associate themselves with a driver and want them to win.

Where we differ from reality shows is we’re not doing it for the money, because we’re not making much if any. We are doing it for the love of the sport and we all want to be the best.

Racing on a budget teaches you self control. If you let your emotions get the best of you on track, then you better have a lot of sponsor money to fix your car afterwards. Up to this point I have never been able to afford to act out on the track. That’s not to say I don’t have moments where I want to move somebody out of my way, but I just can’t.

If I could have anything I wanted, I’d like to get a phone call from Penske, Roush, or Ganassi at the end of the year. In a perfect world you want someone to notice your abilities and give you a shot at a higher level. Who knows, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. At least not to me, but I’m a dreamer.

The night before every race I watch one my favorite movies. It inspires me and reminds me how hard I’ve worked to get where I am. The week leading up to an event I try to relax and surround myself with friends and family. This helps me start the event with a positive mindset.

Lots of jabbering goes on inside my helmet. If people could hear it they would probably die laughing. I talk all the time during the race to motivate myself or to calm myself down.

This year, nobody really makes me nervous. At least not like Chris Castagna did last year. He is an extremely solid racer but he had a way of passing you that always seemed on the ragged edge. He would wait till the last possible moment before pulling out to pass and there was really nothing you could do to defend it. I miss that kid this year.

If I won the Jetta TDI Cup, I’d like to sponsor an aspiring driver, someone who is in the same place as I was growing up. Unfortunately I will have to use the prize money to race next year.

If I could add an 11th race, it would be Pikes Peak International Raceway. I am originally from Colorado Springs, and that’s where a lot of my family and friends live. It would be nice to race in front of the home crowd.

In the beginning of the season our cultural differences seemed to divide us into little groups off the track. You tend to gravitate towards people who are from the same places. Now that we have raced together for half of a season, the groups are breaking up a bit. We are all getting more comfortable with each other.

On track we are all the same. We all want to win.

VW Announces 2010 Jetta TDI Cup Qualifying Paths

September 9, 2009.

With the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup winding down, organizers have launched the search for next season’s best young drivers to compete in the landmark clean diesel racing series.

“I’ve been racing since I was four years old, but the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup was my first professional racing experience,” said returning driver Timmy Megenbier. “Volkswagen has worked extremely hard to make this series a great value for the participating drivers while assuring that all of the cars are equal. As a result, the on-track results really come down to driver skill, which unfortunately isn’t the case in all forms of motorsports. The series has also allowed me to make many contacts that I feel will help me reach the next level in my career.”

Megenbier has been a dominant force in the 2009 series, and is the current Championship points leader with three races left. So far, the series veteran has chalked up three wins, six podium appearances, and two poles, while leading 42 percent of all laps this season (41 laps).

Racers interested in following in Megenbier’s footsteps should begin their journey with VW’s online application. Final driver selection will be held in early February 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada and is the last step in qualifying for the factory series. During selection, candidates will undergo a comprehensive evaluation on the asphalt and in the classroom. After driving tests, media-readiness assessment and a physical fitness examination, 25 young racers will be chosen to participate in the 2010 season.

“Volkswagen takes young driver development very seriously,” said Clark Campbell, Motorsports Manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We obviously test the candidates on driving ability, but we also look at their skills outside of the car. In motorsports, how you handle yourself away from the track is also vitally important. It takes the total package to climb the career ladder, and we provide our drivers with all of the coaching and resources necessary for them to be successful.”

Selected drivers get factory maintained and prepared racecars, media support and promotions, a first class at-track hospitality area as well as ongoing driving instruction.

Driver Requirements
Potential driver candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 26 as of January 1, 2010 and hold a passport from the U.S., Canada or Mexico. In addition, drivers entering the series for the first time must not have competed in any professional racing series regardless of location. Applicants must be able to submit a season entry fee of $45,000 by December 11, 2009 in order to be considered for the final driver selection event. The entry fee will be fully refunded to those not chosen as a 2010 series driver. Further information on application and series rules is available at www.vwmotorsportusa.com.

Interested drivers have three ways to qualify:

• Online application – Applicants can visit www.vwmotorsportusa.com for an online application. On the site, candidates can submit their amateur racing resumes and other details about their past experience. Series officials will then select candidates from these applications to participate in the driver selection program. All applications must be submitted along with the series entry fee by December 11, 2009.

• iRacing.com Jetta TDI Cup online racing season – In conjunction with iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations, Volkswagen has created an online racing experience unlike any other. The Jetta TDI Cup series car has joined the list of racecars offered on iRacing.com, and iRacing has launched an online version of the series. The iRacing.com Jetta TDI Cup series participants will be battling to earn their way into the 2010 final driver selection event. Jetta TDI Cup: Mark Pombo takes win at Mosport

September 8, 2009.

Bowmanville, ON – Mother Nature returned to challenge the 26 drivers competing in today’s Round 7 of the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup at Mosport International Raceway. Overnight rain left the 10-turn, 2.459-mile road course wet and loaded with puddles, which led series officials to run the race on rain tires.

Despite the wet conditions, pole sitter and Duluth, Georgia native, Mark Pombo didn’t waste any time in setting the pace for the race and building a 12-second lead at the half-way point. However, he wouldn’t be without challenge. Timmy Megenbier and Andrew Cordeiro cut the lead down to just a few seconds in the closing laps of the race, but it was Pombo’s day. He held on to win his first Jetta TDI Cup race of the season and his second career series win. He is the fifth different driver to win this season, and the victory moves him into fourth place in the Championship standings.

“Wow, what a great weekend,” Pombo said. “To be able to be fast in every session and lead every lap is the way that I would have dreamed up this weekend. My only regret is that this kind of performance wasn’t earlier in the season. It feels good to get a win, though. During the race, I wanted to get out to a lead so that I could protect my tires. I knew that as the track dried, we would start to use up our rain tires very quickly, and we don’t have an option to change to slicks during the race. Everything went according to plan, and the guys behind me caught me a bit. Fortunately, I was able to hang on.”

Megenbier and Cordeiro battled for the last half of the race with the two swapping positions several times. When the checkered flag fell, it was Megenbier coming in second and Cordeiro third, marking Megenbier’s sixth podium appearance in seven races. It’s also the first podium appearance of the season for local driver Andrew Cordeiro who hails from Woodbridge, Ontario.

The three guest drivers that joined the series this weekend all ran competitively and without incident. ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup driver Maximilian Hackländer topped the guests with a 10th-place finish and nearly ran the fastest lap of the race. He was only .004 seconds slower than Megenbier in a car that he hadn’t driven prior to this weekend. Given his lack of experience, Hackländer was pleased with the result and quite grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Volkswagen driver exchange program.

“I learned quite a lot this weekend,” Hackländer said. “These cars and the track are very different than what I’m used to, but in some ways, I like it better. In Germany, our circuits are traditionally flat, so it was a lot of fun to be able to drive on a course with such terrain. I was able to run competitively all weekend, and I’m very happy with that since I’d never raced these cars before. Plus, I was able to learn a few things that will hopefully help me when I return home to Germany to finish our season.”

The race results didn’t have a major effect on the Championship standings, as Megenbier still maintains the lead with 266 points. He’s trailed by Andy Lee (227), Joey Atterbury (223), Pombo (192) and Jake Thompson (191).

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series’ next race is at New Jersey Motorsports Park, where Rounds 8 & 9 will take place September 11-13.

Forbes.com Video Network: Earth-Friendly Diesel

September 8, 2009.

Check out this insightful video from www.Forbes.com that does a great job of breaking down the science behind TDI clean diesel technology. It also features some key players in the automotive industry, including Diesel Technology Forum Executive Director Allen Schaeffer, who reveals, among other things, that models equipped with clean diesel engines have the distinct advantage over hybrids in that they do not depend on specific urban or suburban terrain to achieve strong gas mileage. Just think: you’ll be one of the few people at the party who can speak intelligently about particulate filtering (it’s the reason your VW TDI model doesn’t spew exhaust like the diesels of yore). Now that’s an icebreaker if we’ve ever heard one…

WWLP: Diesel cars and trucks rivaling hybrids

September 3, 2009.

It may be no surprise that we’ve been championing the diesel cause for quite some time, but it’s pleasant news to see the rest of the country catching on. This news report from WWLP, the NBC affiliate out of the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts, discusses the “comeback” of diesel. They even reference an interesting prediction from J.D. Power & Associates which proposes that diesel sales will make up 8% of all automobile sales in the U.S. by 2015. We still have a ways to go before we rival Europe’s diesel car sales, but VW’s TDI clean diesel technology is certainly a big step in the right direction.

NewYorkTimes.com: Exxon to invest millions to make fuel from algae

September 3, 2009.

Kudos to Exxon Mobil for its recent investment of $600 million into the production of liquid transportation fuels from algae. This financial commitment is a big deal because this type of alternative fuel exploration is vital to meeting Congress’ mandate that biofuel levels reach 36 billion gallons by 2022.

More and more biofuel companies across the US (including this one) are finding new and inexpensive ways to produce clean diesel fuel from locally-grown algae. It’s an exciting announcement from the world’s largest and richest publicly traded oil company, and could go a long way towards addressing our energy dependency and climate change concerns. We’ll keep you posted.
